Pond vs. Lake: What's the Difference for Site Preparation?
While the terms "pond" and "lake" are often used interchangeably, the
scale difference matters for site preparation. A pond (typically under 5
acres and shallow enough that sunlight reaches the bottom throughout)
requires less intensive clearing. A lake (typically 5+ acres with deeper
water that stratifies thermally) demands more thorough basin preparation
because water quality issues in a stratified lake are harder to correct
than in a shallow pond.
For lake projects especially, removing organic material from the basin
before filling is critical. When deep water stratifies in summer —
forming a warm surface layer and a cold, oxygen-depleted bottom layer —
decomposing vegetation on the bottom consumes the remaining oxygen,
creating anoxic conditions that can cause fish kills and release
nutrients that fuel algae blooms. A properly cleared lake basin avoids
these problems from the start.
