This is critical — organic material left in the basin will decompose after flooding, consuming oxygen and releasing tannins that affect water quality. We remove vegetation to mineral soil in the basin area, preparing it for excavation or inundation. Forestry mulching is excellent for the initial clearing pass, with dozer work for stump removal where specifications require it.

The dam is the most critical component of any lake. We clear the dam footprint, including the core trench area, abutments, and emergency spillway. All organic material, stumps, and topsoil must be removed from the dam footprint to ensure a proper bond between the dam fill and the foundation. We work to your engineer's specifications for dam site clearing depth and limits.

Clearing the area around the future lake shoreline for access, aesthetics, and recreation. We can create a park-like setting with selective tree preservation for shade and beauty, or clear more extensively for maximum shoreline access. We also clear the area above the normal pool elevation to accommodate water level fluctuations.

Building a lake requires moving heavy equipment and materials. We clear and rough-grade access roads for construction traffic, dam construction equipment, and future recreational access. These roads also serve as permanent access for lake maintenance.

Forestry mulching removes understory, brush, and small-to-medium trees from the basin area. The mulch stays on-site, stabilizing soil until the lake fills. For larger trees, we use dozers to push and pile material outside the basin. Stumps in the basin are typically cut at or below grade — they'll be underwater and won't interfere with lake use.

The dam footprint requires complete removal of all vegetation, stumps, roots, and topsoil to expose mineral soil. This is typically done with a dozer and root rake. The core trench — the deepest part of the dam foundation — must be cleared to specifications provided by your engineer. This is the most critical clearing on the entire project.

We clear and shape the shoreline zone — typically 20-50 feet above normal pool — for access, aesthetics, and erosion control. Access roads are cleared and rough-graded. If desired, we create cleared areas for future docks, boat ramps, beaches, or picnic areas.

Timber and debris from the basin are either mulched on-site, piled for burning, or stacked for grinding — depending on the volume and your preference. Material from the dam footprint is typically moved well outside the construction zone. We ensure no debris remains in the basin that could float after filling.
